The Stranger
The Stranger, which had its world premiere at Cannes this year, revolves on the newly introduced couple Mark (Joel Edgerton) and Henry (Sean Harris). They start engaging in potentially illegal activities while appearing to be total strangers. Henry was expecting to meet with another man whom he had just met on a bus when Mark takes him up. They travel in tense, mainly quiet convoys, meeting men in dark parking lots or strangely empty hotels with almost no other visitors.
Soon, a wary Henry starts to confide in Mark and relaxes. Although it would be difficult to term it a friendship, it feels like the closest they have been in a while. Mark, however, is not who he is purporting to be and is not here to make friends, as is made clear to us right away. He is actually an undercover police officer who is seeking to elicit information from Henry, who initially seems unconcerned, about a crime that has gone unsolved for a long time.
The way that frequent interruptions can stifle conversation is oppressive. The muted audio that is catching all of the discussions frequently pulls us out of the normal sound. When a piece of equipment malfunctions, the recording briefly assumes a darker, almost demonic tone. The movie engages in a delicate dance that borders on horror before bringing us back from the brink. What makes The Stranger effective is how everything comes together to give the impression that the two guys are nearly condemned to a life of endless wandering in what appears to be an Australian purgatory.
